Female-Led Series: Two women sitting on couch watching tv

Everybody loves a good binge-worthy series. When we get a few moments to ourselves after work or raising kids, it’s nice to plop down in front of the boob tube, kick up our feet, and take our minds off the day’s troubles. As women, it’s even better when we find shows we can relate to with characters that speak to us as moms, wives, and providers. The following is a list of my Favorite Bing-Worthy Female-Led Series you can find on Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. I hope you enjoy these shows as much as I do. Cheers!

Amazon Prime

HBO’s “Girls” – Binge-Worthy Female-Led Series

Girls is by far one of my favorite binge-worthy female-led series. Set in NYC, the HBO series follows twenty-somethings Hannah (Lena Dunham) and her three best friends as they explore love, life, and friendship in this hilarious and honest comedy about relationships and self-discovery. From co-creator and comedy legend Judd Apatow, you’ll laugh, cry, and cringe at some of the raw and unforgettable moments only Lena Dunham and Judd Apatow could bring you. What I love most about this show is how unscripted and uncontrived it seems, making each character, and the show as a whole, seem more sincere and relatable.

HBO’s “Big Little Lies” – Binge-Worthy Female-Led Series

HBO’s Big Little Lies is based on Liane Moriarty’s 2014 bestselling novel by the same name. With an all-star cast of badass actresses including Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Nicole Kidman, Zoë Kravitz, and Laura Dern, this dark comedy-drama will have you hooked by the end of the first episode. And if these 5 weren’t enough to make an unforgettable binge-worthy female-led series, Alexander Scarsgård, Adam Scott, and Meryl Streep (yep I said Meryl Streep) offer more than just supporting roles.

Taking place in the dreamy oceanside town of Monterey California, Big Little Lies tells the story of 5 seemingly innocent moms who get wrapped up in a murder investigation that quickly spirals out of control. If you like a great tale of murder, deceit, mystery, and suspense, this binge-worthy female-led series offers all that and more.

HBO’s “True Blood” – Binge-Worthy Female-Led Series

Based on the series of novels The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris, True Blood tells the story of Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a waitress from the fictional small town of Bon Temps, Louisianna. Shortly after the synthetic blood product “Tru Blood” becomes available allowing Vampires (previously only rumored to exist) to intermix with everyday people, Sookie meets and falls in love with Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), an almost two-century-old vampire. The show combines fantasy, horror, comedy, and drama and explores a number of social and political issues including love, family, equal rights, discrimination, faith, and religion. There’s not much more you could ask for in a series. With 7 seasons and 80 episodes, this binge-worthy female-led series will keep your interests piqued the entire time.

Hulu

HBO’s “Mrs. Fletcher” – Binge-Worthy Female-Led Series

HBO’s Mrs. Fletcher is a relatively new series as of October 2019 based on Tom Perrotta’s novel by the same name. It stars Kathryn Hahn as Eve (Step Brothers, Bad Moms), a divorcée, and recent empty-nester who experiences a sexual awakening after her son Brendan leaves home for college. The series follows both Eve and Brendan on their individual journeys of self-discovery and sexual experimentation. But is everything as straightforward as it seems? Well, you should know it never is. Mrs. Fletcher made my list of binge-worthy female-led series because I’m a huge fan of Kathryn Hahn and was so happy to see her in such a fitting lead role. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

NBC’s “Good Girls” – Binge-Worthy Female-Led Series

NBC’s Good Girls has quickly become one of my favorite binge-worthy female-led series. The show follows three everyday Michigan moms (two of them sisters) who get in way over their heads after deciding to rob a local grocery store to make ends meet. Starring Christina Hendricks (Beth), Retta (Ruby), and Mae Whitman (Annie), this show’s success can be attributed to its quick-witted sarcasm, unnerving plot twists, relatability to characters, and real-life circumstance. Supporting this amazing cast of leading ladies is Reno Wilson (Mike and Molly), Matthew Lillard (Scream, Scooby-Doo), and Manny Montana (Graceland.) If you haven’t seen the show yet, you can check it out Sundays at 10/9c on NBC or stream it now on Hulu.

Comedy Central’s “Broad City” – Binge-Worthy Female-Led Series

Real-life best friends Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson star as “Ilana” and “Abbi” in the hilarious and outlandish sitcom Broad City. Originally a Web series turned critically acclaimed Comedy Central show, the 5 season masterpiece follows Abbi and Ilana through the streets of NYC as they navigate life with a tiny budget and big dreams. Other noteworthy cast members include Hannibal Buress, Arturo Castro, and Ru Paul. Executive producer Amy Poehler guest stars along with a number of other amazing actors including Fred Armisen, Amy Sedaris, and Janeane Garofalo (to name a few). Every episode of this binge-worthy female-led series will have you rolling on the floor laughing. You can catch all 5 seasons on Hulu right now!

Hulu’s “Shrill” – Binge-Worthy Female-Led Series

Aidy Bryant steps away from SNL slapstick to star in this newly released Hulu original based on Lindy West’s book “Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman”. The show follows the talented and up-and-coming journalist Annie Easton on her journey of self-improvement amidst challenges with her weight, an egotistical boss, a sick father, a controlling mother, and a loser boyfriend. It’s a humorous, feel-good show about self-discovery, body-positivity, friendship, and confidence. Both seasons are streaming on Hulu right now, and a much-anticipated third season is already in the works. Check it out today and see why it made my list of favorite binge-worthy female-led series.

Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere – Binge-Worthy Female-Led Series

Reese Witherspoon has done it again in Hulu’s new captivating dramatic series Little Fires Everywhere, based on Celeste Ng’s bestselling novel with the same name. Co-starring Kerri Washington, the show follows the lives of two mothers Elena Richardson (Witherspoon) and Mia Warren (Washington) whose lives become unexpectedly entangled when their kids become close friends. Set in Shaker Heights, OH in the late 1990s, the story explores the intense gravity of motherhood, identity, race, and social class in this enthralling tale of deception and betrayal. This series will have you hooked with its mesmerizing soundtrack and unbelievable plot twists. You don’t want to miss this binge-worthy female-led series!

Love – Binge-Worthy Female-Led Series

Opposites attract in this hilarious Netflix original once again from comedic genius Judd Apatow, along with Leslie Arfin, and Paul Rust. When nice-guy Gus (Paul Rust) and sex addict Mickey (Gillian Jacobs) meet out of the blue, the two form an unexpected relationship unlike either of them has ever experienced. This binge-worthy female-led series explores the ups and downs of love, trust, patience, and compromise. You’ll fall in love with the characters, cringe at their actions, and laugh at the seemingly impossible pairing. In the end, you’ll discover just as they do, why they’re actually the perfect match for each other.

Santa Clarita Diet – Binge-Worthy Female-Led Series

This is by far one of the best binge-worthy female-led series on Netflix. If you’re a fan of Drew Barrymore then you are going to love Santa Clarita Diet. Seriously, this show had me laughing out loud so many times, it’s become one of my favorites. Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant star as Joel and Sheila Hammond, a married couple and “real-i-tor” team (a joke you’ll soon understand) whose everyday lives are turned upside-down when Sheila mysteriously turns “undead”, becoming reliant on human flesh to survive.

Now, this isn’t your stereotypical, blood-thirsty, “zombie” series. You wouldn’t even know anything was wrong with Sheila aside from a one-time bout of vomiting. In fact, she feels better than she ever has. The chemistry between Barrymore and Olyphant is unparalleled. Their daughter Abby (Liv Hewson), neighbor Eric (Skyler Gisondo), as well as the rest of the supporting cast, make Santa Clarita Diet one of the funniest and most outlandish binge-worthy female-led series you’ll ever see!

Dead To Me – Binge-Worthy Female-Led Series

Jen Harding’s (Christina Applegate) life is turned upside-down when her husband is killed out-of-the-blue in a hit and run accident. To cope with his death she joins a support group where she meets fellow griever and instant friend, Judy Hale (Linda Cardellini). With little help from the police in solving the murder, Jen becomes determined to find her husband’s killer, leading her own private investigation with the help of her new bestie, Judy. As more and more clues come to surface, Jen quickly realizes not everything is as it seems. With season two set to air in early May 2020, there’s still plenty of time to squeeze in the first season of this awesome binge-worthy female-led series!

Workin’ Moms – Binge-Worthy Female-Led Series

Next on Mom Snippets’ list of Favorite Binge-Worthy Female-Led Series is Workin’ Moms. Originally a popular sitcom in Canada, the show has gained an even more enormous following since being picked up by Netflix in 2019. This series paints a vivid picture of what it’s really like to be a working mom in today’s world, delving into topics like pregnancy, breastfeeding, maternity leave, co-parenting, infidelity, abortion, marriage, and friendship. The show stars Catherine Reitman (Kate), Jessalyn Wanlim (Jenny), Dani Kind (Anne), and Juno Rinaldi (Frankie), as four friends maneuvering hilariously through life as new moms. There’s never been a funnier, more realistic portrayal of motherhood, and with season 4 rumored to air on Netflix this coming Spring, there’s not much time left to get caught up! What are you waiting for?

Gilmore Girls – Binge-Worthy Female-Led Series

Yes, I know, this show is 20 years old, but I had to include it on my list of Favorite Binge-Worthy Female-Led Series. Gilmore Girls is well-known for its witty banter and clever dialogue delivered extraordinarily by the show’s two main characters Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Rory (Alexis Bledel) Gilmore. The story follows the lives of this dynamic mother and daughter pair over seven seasons, as they live out their lives in the small, close-knit community of Stars Hollow. You’ll quickly grow to appreciate the running themes, lovable characters, memorable guest stars, and subtle nuances that make this series so memorable and special. Check it out for yourself and discover why it’s so endeared amongst its fans and one of my favorite binge-worthy female-led series!

  2. This is great!! I haven’t seen most of these so I am excited to have some new ideas 🙂 I LOVED Gilmore Girls, probably seen the whole series at least 3 times. Workin’ Moms is so funny and real. I have only seen the first season of True Blood, completely forgot about it. I need to pick that back up!

  3. Great list!
Santa Clarita Diet is one of our absolute favorites!!

Found a couple that I need to check out as well!

  4. I LOVED “Dead to Me.” Enjoyed the book, “Little Fires Everywhere,” but just don’t see it as a series.

  5. I love Gilmore Girls, and I continue to watch it. Another show I love is Call The Midwife. It is based in England, and it goes from late 1949,s through the 60’s. It is on Netflix and is all about babies, poverty and hardships. I haven’t seen the Working Mom’s or Dead to Me, but I can’t wait to get started on them. Thanks for sharing.

  6. Just finished Little Fires Everywhere. And I LOVED Big Little Lies – binged watched that during middle of the night feedings with my first baby. Haven’t gotten to watch the second season yet so that’ll be my next show!

  7. Glad you included the Gilmore Girls! The Drew Barrymore series and the Christina Applegate series look good. Thanks for getting me up to speed!

  8. Love this I’m always interested in a good female lead haha. Seen a few of these absolutely devastated Santa Clarita Diet isn’t coming back not ashamed to say I almost cried reading the article saying it’s cancelled. Wish I had HBO xx

  9. I watch Gilmore Girls every holiday season! I love following through the seasons with them and it just makes it so much more cozy, especially living in California without any seasons haha. I also loved Dead to Me.

I read Big Little Lies so I had a few ideas about the characters that isn’t what they got from it I guess, so that was disappointing. I only watched the first season, but I really couldn’t get over the fact that it was supposed to take place in Australia – it being in California really took away from the story I feel like. Great post!

    • A friend of mine said the same thing about BLLs! I didn’t read the book, so I can totally see why it wouldn’t be as captivating! Thanks so much for the comment!
